Our Practice

The Iyengar method is systematic and thorough. It is carefully structured so that you can make safe progress at your own pace. There is a focus on the correct alignment of the body and great attention is given to correct practice.

Yoga props are often used to improve a pose, to gain better understanding and to learn how to relax the body.

What To Expect From an Iyengar Yoga Class

In a beginners’ or general class, the emphasis is on standing poses to build strength and stamina. This is followed by the gradual introduction of seated and reclining yoga poses, backbends, inverted poses, and twists. All asanas are clearly demonstrated and explained.

Props such as belts, blankets, and blocks are used to improve your understanding of the poses. They are also useful in learning how to adjust and align the body correctly. This emphasis on alignment is unique to Iyengar yoga. All classes end with a recuperative pose (Savasana) to completely relax the body.

Regular asana practice ultimately prepares the body and mind for yogic breathing (pranayama). Students will be introduced to pranayama once the body is strong enough to sit or lie for an extended period without distractions.
